Since its local launch in early 2019, the new Chevrolet Monza has become a notable sales success in China and is currently Chevrolet‘s best-selling nameplate in that country. Although this compact sedan is thus far a unique vehicle for the Chinese market, GM Authority has learned that General Motors plans to introduce the next-generation Monza in Mexico.
Sources familiar with the matter informed us that GM has plans to launch the Chevrolet Monza in the Mexican market in the coming months, as sedans maintain a high level of acceptance in the Latin country. In fact, the compact-sedan segment remains one of the most popular in Mexico, but the company hasn’t competed in it since production of the Chevrolet Cruze ceased in North America last year.
As such, Mexico will become the first foreign country to receive the new Chevrolet Monza since the historic nameplate was resurrected in November 2018 on a China-exclusive vehicle. The automaker made this decision by taking advantage of the existing trade agreement between Mexico and the Asian giant, which will remain the only country where the latest-generation Monza is manufactured.
Based on the GM-PATAC K platform, the Chevrolet Monza is a compact-sized four-door sedan that measures 181.6 inches long, 70.8 inches wide, and 58.5 inches high, mounted on a 103.9-inch wheelbase. Although initially launched as Chevrolet’s more rational choice for the entry-level C-segment, the Monza ended up totally replacing the second-generation Cruze in the Chinese market.
The 2021 Monza has four powertrain options, consisting of a newly added naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, two turbocharged three-cylinder engines, and a mild hybrid variant supplemented with an electric motor and 48-volt battery. We think the most logical choice for its role in Mexico (over the new Onix) is the turbo 1.3L I-3 engine with 163 horsepower, along with the six-speed automatic transmission.
The Chevrolet Monza is currently in the testing and validation phase of its components to define its final configuration for the Mexican market. The vehicle is expected to be launched in the country later this year or early 2021, as Chevrolet’s new offering in the C sedan segment. In addition, it will serve as an indirect replacement for the Chevrolet Cavalier, also of Chinese origin, which has occupied the B-plus segment without much success.
