Tequila Herradura is known for innovating in the tequila category. At 150 years old, the brand is one of the oldest distilleries operating in Mexico today. The brand was behind the creation of both the Reposado and Extra-Anejo categories of aged tequila, and today it\u2019s unveiling a new first-of-its kind tequila: Tequila Herradura Legend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe tequila category has seen rapid growth in the U.S. over the past five years, forcing distilleries to become more creative, and more innovative with the tequila\u2019s they\u2019re introducing to the market,\u201d Jennifer Simmonds, Senior Brand and Integration Manager, Tequila Herradura tells Forbes<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similar to other aged tequilas, Tequila Herradura Legend is made from 100% blue agave that has been naturally fermented, distilled, and the matured in new American White Oak barrels. However, it\u2019s those barrels that also make the tequila unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Herradura is part of Brown Forman, the company behind brands such as Jack Daniel\u2019s, Old Forester, and Woodford Reserve. The company makes its own barrels, which give each of the brands in its portfolio the opportunity to do a bit more than some others in the market when it comes to maturation. Herradura is currently the only tequila distillery that makes its own barrels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The barrels for Legend have been deeply grooved, which exposes the tequila to more layers of oak than it might have touched otherwise. The tequila matures in the barrels for 14 months, and end result is an A\u00f1ejo tequila with a deep, rich color and vanilla and oak flavors you might expect to find in a spirit that\u2019s been aged much longer.On the nose you\u2019ll get that signature scent of roasted agave, but you also get oak, vanilla and caramel along with a bit of dry fruit. The tequila itself is meant to be enjoyed like you might a nice whiskey, and it shares some of the same characteristics: toasted oak, vanilla, dried fruit and caramel are balanced with roasted agave and a little spice for a delightful sipping tequila. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cResidents of Mexico have been sipping Tequila Herradura for 150 years. And while I\u2019m sure those early residents at Casa Herradura may be surprised to see how tequila consumption has grown over the past century and a half, I believe they\u2019d appreciate the time honored traditions that still drive all of our expressions, and impressed how tequilas like Herradura Legend continue to push the boundaries on the category,\u201d Simmonds tells Forbes<\/em>. \u201cFrom the length of aging, to the barrel itself, to our Master Taster, Karinna Enriquez Hurtado, Legend is a one-of-a-kind premium sipping experience that is sure to surprise and delight both tequila enthusiasts and novices alike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the release is exciting due to the unique barrels Herradurra is using to mature the tequila, it\u2019s also a big release for the brand because it\u2019s the first release under a new generation of Casa Herradura\u2019s female legacy, specifically the brand\u2019s master taster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re fortunate to have a Master Taster like Karinna Enriquez Hurtado, who continues our legacy of developing ground breaking techniques for tequila production,\u201d says Simmonds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While this is Hurtado\u2019s first release, it\u2019s likely to be far from her last, which means there\u2019s likely even more exciting releases headed our way in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Legend will be initially available this month in select markets, including New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Oregon, California, Texas, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina with a suggested retail for $125 USD. Herradura plans to make Legend available as a permanent addition to its portfolio,.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
